Adam has had type one diabetes for 27 years. Originally from York, he now lives in Baltimore and does Slate and Copper roofing- Historic restoration/repair, Real Estate Investor, and DJs by night. He also plays ice hockey, likes cycling, tattoos, music and traveling. Adam is a busy guy, always on the go. He has to find the time to manage his diabetes without letting it affect his busy life. In Adam’s words: Adam BMC 4

“A 50 hour work week is casual for me and my job is very physically demanding. I’m often working 100 plus feet off the ground out in the elements. It’s important that my sugar is under control throughout the day while I’m running a crew in an environment where making a mistake could be fatal. On the weekends I’m often DJing during peak club hours for 1-5 hours at a time and abandoning the booth for low sugar in the middle of the party is less than ideal. I also don’t want high sugar to sap my endurance and have it bring down the energy in the club that I spent all night cultivating.

It’s a tough balance in either direction, too high or too low are both detrimental in different ways.

I’ve been diabetic for so long that the physical parts like injecting insulin, testing, lows and highs etc. don’t bother me anymore but psychologically it all takes it toll. The looming possibility of long term complications is always there. There is no formula and no guarantee that things won’t happen later on in life, which is hard to accept, due to the fear that taking “good” care of yourself may not be enough.” Adam BMC 2
